Co-Principal Investigator on the BALM programme. Paul is a leading men’s health scholar with over 15 years’ experience of researching barriers and facilitators to men’s engagement with health services.
Co-Principal Investigator on the BALM programme. Dean has a joint appointment between Hull York Medical School and the Department of Health Sciences, University of York. He is a clinical psychologist with a track-record in the development and evaluation of brief psychological interventions for common mental health problems.
Co-Lead on the BALM programme. Kate is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Doctoral Research Fellow. Most recently, Kate managed the CASPER study randomised controlled trials which focused on collaborative care for older people with subthreshold depression and major depression.
Researcher on the BALM programme. Most recently Heidi was researcher on an NIHR NENC ARC funded project evaluating NHS TEWV weight management services for inpatients living with Severe Mental Illness and/or Learning Disabilities.

GP Principal in Central Manchester, Professor of General Practice Research at Keele University. Carolyn’s main areas of interest and expertise include the primary care management of people with mental health problems, multiple health conditions and unexplained symptoms; and the mental health and wellbeing of clinicians. She has qualitative research methods expertise, drawing on theories from social sciences and psychology, but always with a focus on clinical practice.
Consultant Paramedic within the Medical Directorate at North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Steve is the Research Lead for the organisation with responsibility for setting the strategic direction for research and developing the Trust’s research portfolio through collaboration and participation in both NIHR Portfolio and non-portfolio studies. Steve is a member of the National Ambulance Research Steering Group (NARSG).
Michael has worked in the NHS since he qualified as a nurse in 2009 from Northern Ireland. He completed his PhD using mixed methods and is passionate about patient and staff experience informing improvement practices in healthcare. Michael is currently the Head of Nursing, Research and Patient Experience at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and supports a variety of research activities.
Della is a Research Fellow within the department of Health Sciences. She has previous clinical experience working within both the voluntary sector and the NHS and now supports the development and delivery of brief psychological interventions for common mental health problems. She has supported a number of large scale trials both in the UK and abroad.
